"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." - World Commission on Environment and Development
CSUDH embraces sustainability as a core value in line with its commitment to social, environmental, and educational justice. As an institution, we recognize and live up to our responsibility to our campus community, and the community at large, through the sustainable and equitable stewardship of our natural, social, and economic resources (CSUDH Strategic Plan).
CSUDH Sustainability efforts are broadly supported through and by the individual actions and efforts of all Toros. Campus-wide resources, initiatives, programs, projects, and reporting are formally organized under two major units both managed by the same Director: the Office of Sustainability (under Facilities Services) and the institutional-level academic Center for Sustainability and the Environment.
• The Office of Sustainability, housed under the department of Facilities Services, works collaboratively with stakeholders in administration, academics, and student services to promote and implement sustainability practices across campus. Supported by a team of full-time staff and student interns actively working to help the campus “go green,” the Office of Sustainability is always eager to partner with the campus community to pursue new initiatives and partnerships.
• The Center for Sustainability and the Environment, an approved academic Center at CSUDH, serves as an institutional-level university resource in harnessing the interdisciplinary strengths of the various academic programs on the CSUDH campus. The Center strives to institutionalize environmental sustainability within CSUDH’s academic units and curricular/research activities, ensure the university’s ongoing prominence as a sustainability and environmental justice leader in higher education, and provide a collaborative platform for pursuing associated extramural funding opportunities in the area.
Both entities collaborate with the chartered University Sustainability Committee. This committee serves in an advisory capacity to the President and is charged with cultivating interest, promoting, and supporting efforts to educate the campus community and institutionalizing sustainability at CSUDH. Equally important, it ensures the university’s ongoing prominence as a sustainability leader in higher education locally, regionally, and nationally. (For full charter information on the University Sustainability Committee, please view PM 2021-02 (Revised)).
CSUDH as a whole is on the cutting edge of sustainability efforts by an urban campus, and actively engages faculty, students, and staff in on-campus sustainability efforts.
We are always looking at ways to increase partnerships and funding to support the educational, research, and public service missions of the university as they relate to sustainability.
